These games aren’t only feeding our hunger for nostalgia—they’re creating modern experiences, with gameplay and audiovisual elements every bit as impressive (and popular) as their flashier 3D counterparts. With more than 15 million sales worldwide, indie hit Stardew Valley is just one example of pixel art games’ rising popularity over the past decade, opening doors for a whole new generation of creators to build off of classics from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. They look retro, but offer new experiences impossible to replicate on old hardware. Any list of the best pixel art games wouldn’t be complete without Minecraft. Just like Terraria, Minecraft is a sandbox game, so it doesn’t really have a single official end goal. Essentially, all you have to do is explore the game’s 3D world, break apart blocks, and build all sorts of stuff.

Classroom Games At GA-CCRi, we recently built on an open source version to train deep learning neural networks with data from GA-CCRi employees playing Battleship against each other. Over time, the automated Battleship-playing agent did better and better, developing strategies to improve its play from game to game. In 2002, Hasbro renamed the Cruiser to Destroyer, taking three squares, and introduced a new two-square ship called the Patrol Boat. One variant of Battleship allows players to decline to announce that a ship has been sunk, requiring their opponent to take further shots in order to confirm that an area is clear.
